Background Information[]

Roley is a fictional green road roller created by Keith Chapman and Diane Redmond. He was the fifth machine to join Bob's team, as shown in When Bob Became A Builder.

In 1998, Roley made his debut in the Series 1 episode, Scoop Saves the Day, and had appeared in every series since.

Roley appears to be based on a Zettelmeyer diesel road roller.

Behind the Scenes[]

Stop-Motion model[]

Roley's original stop-motion model was scratch-built for the original series by Mackinnon and Saunders. The model was constructed from plastic, diecast and fibreglass, and painted in a glossy finish. His eyes were fitted with the ability to spin around.

Six different mouth-plates were sculpted for Roley and used on-screen between the original series and Project: Build It, one of which was seen upside-down to resemble a different expression. His mouth-plates would also be used for Flex.

Keith Chapman owns one of the models as for the others. It's unknown what happened to the Roley models, it's presumed that the models are currently in storage in HiT Entertainment's archives.

CGI model[]

In 2010, the series was relaunched as Bob the Builder: Ready, Steady, Build!. It introduced Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) as a replacement for the show's long-standing stop-motion animation. Roley was recreated from scratch in CGI by SD Entertainment. Photographs of his stop-motion model were used for referencing.

Roley's sad mouth was mistakenly turned upside down and used on one of Scoop's models when it was on display along with one of Bob's puppets at the Waterside Arts Centre for the Mackinnon & Saunders: 30 Years And Beyond event.
