Bob's Big Plan is the pilot episode of Bob the Builder: Project: Build It.

Plot

Bob hears of a contest to design a new settlement in Sunflower Valley, a place he would often visit with his twin brother Tom during their childhoods. He decides to enter it and have his concept be as environmentally friendly as possible. He wins the contest, only to discover that the main prize is the job of constructing it.

Summary

When Bob and the team are building an extension to the offices of Mr Adams the local architect, Bob hears of a competition to build a brand new town in nearby Sunflower Valley, a place Bob knows very well from his childhood. Mr Adams shows Bob his idea. There are to be night clubs, restaurants, tower blocks - it's going to be big and glitzy and noisy. The machines ask Bob what Sunflower Valley is like now and Bob shows them by projecting some old home movies on to the workshop door. It's a beautiful place bursting with lovely sunflowers. Bob explains that the Sunflowers will probably have to be dug up to make way for the new city. Can Bob build it? Yes he caaaaan!

Deleted Scenes (Work-in-Progress)

Many scenes were cut from the UK version, but re-instated in the US version, those being:

  • Bob telling Dizzy what an architect is when she asks between Bob explaining they need to build an extension for Mr. Adams and Lofty resuming knocking the building down.
  • A good chunk of the scene where Wendy calls Bob to say goodbye before she goes on her holiday is cut; the bit where she says she's leaving for the airport soon and the bit where Bob asks the machines if they want to speak to her, to which they tell her to have fun on her vacation and that they'll miss her, to which she says she'll miss them too.
  • A shot of Bob putting Lofty's hook back on before Mr. Adams arrives.
  • Bob saying camping in Sunflower Valley with Tom was great fun.
  • Bob saying "Well team,.." before he says the site's clear.
  • The scene of Bob and the team watching the home movies runs a bit longer in the US than in the UK, as the beginning of the episode is slightly extended and it segues into the episode much sooner than in the UK, plus Bob and the machines reactions are fully seen onscreen and Bob chuckles before explaining the goat.
  • Roley appears onscreen when he asks what will happen to all the sunflowers when they build in Sunflower Valley.
  • After Bob told the Machines he had a Nightmare and decided to join the Competition, Dizzy said, "Oh Wow!" then Muck cheers, "That's Fantastic Bob!" and Scoop respond, "I knew you should." In the UK Dub It Only Showed Lofty replied, "Oh How Exciting!"
  • Bob telling the team to come and get him if they need anything, to which Scoop says, "No Prob Bob!"
  • Scoop telling Lofty to take the bricks back to the yard.
  • An extended shot of Muck and Dizzy coming over to see Mr. Adams' model, while Muck's line is said sooner than in the UK.
  • In the closeup of Bird on Roley's roof, the sky is different.
  • Roley chuckling after saying they can't build nests for people to live in.
  • A closeup of Bird in his nest before he flies down to Bob's workbench.
  • In the US dub, Scoop says "I'm so glad we didn't have to get Bob back."
  • A longer scene of Bob using his router on the piece of wood.
  • The scene of the machines clearing up the concrete, filing the foundation while digging the correct foundation and Bob drawing the shape of where to cut the upper part of the base of the model are presented as a montage instead of the screen being divided into four squares.
  • A view of Bobsville completely dark between Scoop lamenting that Bob will never be finished before the competition the next day and Bob saying that the power company told him the electricity will be on again eventually.
  • The US dub has a scene of Bob working on his model before the next one of the machines pointing out what's on there.
  • A scene of Bob calling Wendy, who is relaxing on a beach chair, after Mayor Bunty tells him that she wants him to build Sunflower Valley and they make an agreement that Wendy will look after the Bobsville yard until they can find someone else (who turns out to be Robert in Scoop's Recruit).

Trivia

  • Bunty Ferguson returns in this episode.
  • This is both considered a normal episode along with being a 24-minute special (28 minutes in the US).
  • Despite premiering in 2005, this episode was produced in 2004 according to the UK credits. This is also considered to be an aired pilot episode.
  • Even though this is an episode of Project: Build It, the UK version uses the opening from the Original Series while the US version uses the opening from Project: Build It. However, some digital releases of the US version use the Original Series opening.
  • Most of the US dub voices are changed starting with this episode.
  • This special/episode marks the first of several things:
    • The very first special episode of the show.
    • The first production for the Project: Build It era.
    • The first episode to feature Sunflower Valley.
    • The first episode where Bob is voiced by Greg Proops in the US dub.
    • The first episode where Lofty is voiced by Emma Tate in the US dub giving him more of a female voice.
    • The first episode where Spud and Mr. Bentley are voiced by Rob Rackstraw in the US dub, as well as the first episode where they speak in the same accents from the original UK dub.
    • The first episode to use the new series music done by Keith Hopwood.
    • The first episode produced by HiT Entertainment under ownership of Apax Partners.

  • This special/episode marks the last of some things:
    • The last cameo appearances of Molly and Jenny to date.
    • The last speaking appearance of Mrs. Potts to date.
    • The last episode to feature Bob and the construction vehicles living in Bobsville.
    • Last appearance of the rain gutters on Bob's house being blue till Scrambler to the Rescue.
  • In the US version, a shortened version of the short "Recycling Pilchard" is shown in the beginning.
  • The US DVD contains more content than the UK DVD.
  • In the US dub:
  • This episode premiered the same day as the Channel 5 show Fifi and the Flowertots, another show created by Keith Chapman.
  • It is unknown whether fans of the show (mostly the viewers who grew up with the Original Series and transitioned to Project: Build It) wondered why Bob, Lofty, Spud and Mr. Bernard Bentley's voices suddenly changed without an explanation at the beginning of Project: Build It. And why they suddenly chose to use Spud and Mr. Bentley's voices from the UK dub for the remainder of the US dub when Alan Marriott still remained in the US dub as Scoop and Travis.
  • Mr. Bentley makes a reference to Evel Knievel when Scrambler drives away from Bob's yard.
    • This is changed in the Slovenian version, where Mr. Bentley makes a reference to Michael Schumacher.
  • In the UK version, when Scrambler arrives, there is no music. However, the US version restores the missing music cues.
  • This is the fifth time Bob and Wendy hugged each other.
  • Tubi uses a unique version of this special, which is the same length as the UK version, bar the US intro. One notable change is Bob's moaning during his nightmare being present, whereas it is removed in the extended US version.
  • The machines are represented by their Racing Champions die-cast toys in the aerial shot at the end.

Goof

  • In the Dutch dub, the English logo is used instead of the Dutch one.
